Social Action–General Information

To be a Reform Jew is to be engaged in the ongoing work of tikkun olam; to strive to improve the world in which we live. Port Jewish Center celebrates a strong commitment to Social Action through its commitment to action, education, and advocacy:

Action: As a community, we engage in local collection projects that support clothing and feeding those in need, encourage literacy, and aid in reducing our ecological footprint. Among these, we celebrate our yearly High Holy Day Food Drive and Winter Clothing Drive, both in support of the food pantry at Our Lady of Fatima (our neighborhood church) and the Port Washington School District's Outreach program.

Education: We welcome speakers and other educational opportunities which help us understand the needs of local, national, and international populations and how Jewish values inform our ongoing support of individuals and aid organizations.

Advocacy: Both locally and through our affiliation with the Religious Action Center of the Reform Movement, we speak out on issues of Jewish import, but certainly not limited to the Jewish community. Issues of Social Justice and legislative activity that concern us range from economic justice to civil rights, from religious liberty to the State of Israel.

Please consider the Barbara Johnson Social Action fund at PJC when making contributions in honor or in memory of a loved one.

Houses for Change

We are so proud of our religious school students, who collect tzedakah between Sukkot and Chanukah for the specific purpose of buying groceries for the food pantry at our neighbor, Our Lady of Fatimah.
